The conditions and future of post-industrial cities and towns have been thrown into fresh turmoil by a spate of populist breakthroughs across the global North. In the UK, this has created severe anxieties about the political, economic and social future of communities alleged to be ‘left behind’ by global trends. Competing with a toxic nationalist discourse, one progressive consequence has been fresh interest in models of ‘new municipalism’, inspired, in part, by post-crash experiments explored in cities like Barcelona. In this presentation I will attempt to move beyond Brexit spaces and pathologies to explore parallels with post-crash drivers, conditions and struggles in other European regions.
