Summary:
This project aims to improve and reuse the rooftops of the district of Ciutat Vella (Barcelona) from the perspective of active and healthy aging. The project includes socio-demographic diagnosis, analysis of existing rooftops in the district and research of low-cost, removable and recyclable solutions. It proposes to develop a catalog of microprojects and the prototype of integral solutions as proposals for application in pilot cases and reproducible in other parts of the city and the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona.
Results:
The analysis of needs and potential use of rooftops as community spaces reveals that this is mediated by gentrification and touristification. Neighbours fear that common space become commodified and used as assets for tourist attraction. Besides, elderly people has difficulties to access rooftops. Despite these concerns, two pilot projects have been developed facilitating the use of rooftops as public spaces for neighbours. Further analysis will focus on the impact of such interventions.
